African print fabrics, whether woven or wax prints, come in a variety of colours, textures, and patterns. They are usually very vibrant and full of life. When you choose the right combinations for your projects, you’re sure to get a stunning results.

Simply sewing an African print fabric without adding any embellishments or accessories will still give you a beautiful finish because these fabrics are inherently eye-catching.

However, coordinating different African prints can elevate your project, giving it an even more impressive look.

I absolutely love experimenting with African prints when sewing. The great thing about pairing African textiles is that there aren’t any strict rules, which gives me room to be creative and playful.

1# Pair African prints with solid fabrics

When I pick any African print fabric for a sewing project, I usually start by focusing on the colours in it. I like to choose one or two colours from the print to use as my solid fabric.

Typically, I go for the less dominant colour so the prints don’t clash or overwhelm the design. However, some people prefer using the most prominent colour as their solid, which can also work. It all depends on your taste.

Sometimes, I don’t even choose a colour from the print. Rather, I select a coordinating solid fabric in a complementary shade.

It’s best if the solid fabric has the same texture and weight as the African printif the print is cotton, I use a cotton solid.

But you can also pair your prints with solids like crepe, satin, lace, silk, or organza.

Pairing prints with solids is my favorite way of coordinating fabrics because they really highlight each other.
